England captain and Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has pushed back on criticism aimed at the EURO 2024 Three Lions squad, reminding former players who are now pundits of their own struggles with the national team.

England has had a lukewarm tournament so far, winning 1-0 in their opener, which was followed by a 1-1 draw with Denmark.

Much has been said about their performance against the Danes, with former players such as Wayne Rooney, Gary Lineker, and Rio Ferdinand expressing disappointment with the tactics used and the players’ application on the field.

Kane shared his thoughts during a press conference ahead of England’s final group game against Slovenia. He said: “I’d never want to be disrespectful to any player, especially, you know, a player who’s worn the shirt and knows what it’s like to play for England. I always feel like [former players and pundits] have a responsibility. I know they’ve got to be honest and give their opinion, but also they have a responsibility of being an ex-England player.

“The bottom line is, we haven’t won anything as a nation for a long, long time. And, you know, a lot of these ex-players were part of that as well… they do know that it’s tough to play in these major tournaments. It’s tough to play for England.”

England will face Slovenia on Tuesday at 9 PM.
