Kaizer Chiefs’ interim coach, Cavin Johnson, believes they should have won the match comfortably if they were able to convert their chances in the 1-1 draw against AmaZulu in the DSTV Premiership on Sunday.

Usuthu goalkeeper Veli Mothwa was named man-of-the-match for his great performance between the sticks.

Chiefs took an early lead through Ashley Du Preez before Victor Letsoalo equalized for AmaZulu six minutes before halftime.

“When you think about the whole game and the first thing you say is, who’s the Man of the Match? And it’s the goalkeeper (Mothwa), it shows you how much possession we had.

“I thought we started the game probably not as nicely as we would have liked to, but the breakaways we had, we should have scored them and we get a goal again against us. I thought it was a free-kick beforehand and my players switched off, which is not normal. He gets a good cross in the box and we give away a cheap goal.

“I think also we should have gotten a penalty along the way after that, and he does not give a penalty, he does not give a red card, so there’s a lot we can take from that,” Johnson told SuperSport TV.

Johnson bemoaned Du Preez’s poor finishing after getting through on goal towards the end of the game. “The best one for me was towards the end, Ashley should have buried that. Mothwa is on the way. Second time Saile comes, kicks the near post and he saves the game. I thought the boys put in a big effort, and I hope it looked better on TV, and I’m sure we came out to win the game, we didn’t,” Johnson added.

With two league rounds remaining, the Glamour Boys are still occupying the 8th spot, but they are in danger of missing as six other teams are fighting for the same position.

“We drew the last game, we drew this one, we put in the effort, we’re not scoring goals. We have to be a lot calmer in front of goal. Let’s enjoy it. You look ‘Obrigado’ (Mfundo Vilakazi) when he came on to the pitch, he loves football, and yeah, he’ll get more time,” Johnson continued.
