Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson blamed the team’s inability to convert opportunities after his charges suffered a 2-0 loss to Chippa United in the DSTV Premiership match held at the Buffalo City Stadium on Saturday.

The Glamour Boys enjoyed a bright start to the game and missed a few good chances in the opening 20 minutes.

Chippa opened the scoring in the 20th minute through Bienvenu Eva Nga. They doubled the lead 12 minutes later through Sinoxolo Kwayiba.

Johnson’s charges dominated proceedings for larger parts of the game but lacked the killer instinct in front of goal.

The Chiefs mentor insisted they could’ve taken the lead within the first 20 minutes.

“I thought the first 20 minutes of the game belonged to us, we entered their area where we were supposed to score goals, probably 5-6 times. We broke, we were supposed to score but we didn’t put it in the back of the net and then we suffered afterwards.

“Then we gave away (two goals), the first goal was very soft from an out-ball throw, the second goal we didn’t put pressure on the ball and they also got into the box and they scored two goals.

“Coming out, their tails are high, we have to go at them. You see the second half, I thought we played in one half in the second half but again the goalkeeper makes a magic save with Sithebe’s shot, Ranga doesn’t put the ball in the net, Ashley doesn’t come into the box to get something out of it,” Johnson told SuperSport TV.

Johnson also explained his decision to make seven changes to the starting XI that played in the midweek loss to Stellenbosch.

“We’re just not calm enough in the box, the rest I’m happy with, they put in the effort. And the changes, I don’t think the changes changed the game so much. They were just not calm enough to put the ball in the back of the net.

“We’re gonna take two steps back now and come back and really, really work on what we’re trying to achieve because right now we’re in a little bit of a hole, and the people that can get us out there are the players. So we take inspection of the players and take ourselves out,” Johnson added.

The Glamour Boys have 14 days to prepare for their next league assignment against Richards Bay on the 20th of April.
