Young Africans coach Miguel Gamondi has criticized the decision by VAR not to award his side a goal after Stephane Aziz Ki’s second half strike looked to have crossed the goal line in their CAF Champions League match with Mamelodi Sundowns on Friday night.

In what was a nail-biting CAF Champions League quarter final second leg clash, Yanga SC faced a devastating defeat against Mamelodi Sundowns, losing 3-2 on penalties after a fiercely contested match that ended in a 0-0 draw

After the match, Gamondi didn’t hold back his emotions, expressing deep disappointment and questioning the integrity of the game following the VAR decision that denied what seemed like a crucial goal for his team.

“It’s not good for African football what happened today. We play a big team, but unlucky,” Gamondi said.

“This big team doesn’t need the help from VAR. I’m very disappointed and I think all the supporters from Yanga, they must see.

“They did cheating against the country and this is very bad.”

Reacting to Gamondi’s comments, Sundowns coach Rhulani Mokwena, didn’t want to engage in the debate whether it was a goal or not, pointing towards a contentious non-penalty decision against his side in the first half.

“Yeah, and I can’t find words to appease him, of course the feeling [of being robbed] like any other coach… I would rather on my side be extremely complimentary of the opposition instead of taking that direction,” he said.
