The DStv Premiership kicks off on a Tuesday this week with three matches to look forward to, and another five fixtures on Wednesday. We take a look at this evening’s clashes, with Kaizer Chiefs vs. Golden Arrows being the highlight of the action.
AmaZulu vs Moroka Swallows
Two of the country’s oldest football clubs meet at Moses Mabhida Stadium as they look to atone for their poor form since the start of the year. AmaZulu have been resoundingly beaten in the two league matches they’ve played so far, conceding three goals apiece against Cape Town Spurs and Mamelodi Sundowns. Moroka Swallows, burdened by financial issues and an inexperienced squad, have collected a point from a possible four.
This might be the toughest match to watch as a neutral, with both clubs usually adopting cagey strategies in their gameplans. Swallows have failed to find the net in their last three games while Usuthu have registered six goals in their previous six encounters. The Dube Birds prevailed by 2-1 in the reverse fixture at Dobsonville Stadium but the home side may prove to be a stern test this time around. AmaZulu displayed great resilience despite their 3-0 defeat at Sundowns. They held the champions 0-0 at half-time and only crumbled in the second-half. Usuthu will look to get back to winning ways here. Get on the home side.
Prediction: AmaZulu Straight win
Cape Town City vs Stellenbosch
The stage is set for the eagerly anticipated Cape Town Derby between Cape Town City and Stellenbosch in the top-half of the DSTV Premiership. Both teams have added incentive knowing that a win may momentarily may move them into second position, maybe momentarily. With the first encounter ending 1-0 in favour of Stellenbosch, the home side will be firmly looking to reclaim the bragging rights.
The Cityzens have restarted the season with two straight draws, scoring a goal each in those ties against SuperSport United and Chippa United. They were also eliminated by SuperSport in the Nedbank to compound misery on their winless start to the year. Stellenbosch, like their rivals, are yet to win in a full 90 minutes since the return of domestic action. They recorded two consecutive 1-1 draws and were made to scrap through to the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup after beating second-tier Pretoria Callies in the penalty shootout.
Both teams are sure to find the net here but they may end up cancelling each other. Khanyisa Mayo’s great form means City have a goal in them while the dynamic Stellies are also a goal threat with their pacey and incisive attackers. Get on the Both Teams To Score.
Prediction: Both Teams To Score
Kaizer Chiefs vs Golden Arrows
Two teams with a poor recent return of form collide in this six pointer tie. A win for Kaizer Chiefs will be their first of the year and may spark a change in fortunes for the Glamour Boys who are winless in three matches in 2024. Golden Arrows have been defeated in 10 straight matches in all competitions, with three of those defeats coming this year.
Chiefs’ main issue has been their inability to convert chances upfront while Arrows have been poor infront of goal and leaked goals at the back. Amakhosi are yet to score in open play in all their three matches this year, a worrying sign given the words of affirmation by interim coach Cavin Johnson, who has continuously maintained that the attackers will find the net eventually. Abafana Bes’thende have conceded six goals since the start of the year, while scoring two goals in the process.
This is a perfect match for both clubs to turn their seasons around and ease pressure on the coaches who appear to be looking out of sorts. Chiefs are failing to score while Arrows have the odd goal to spring a surprise here. Arrows last win in the league came against Chiefs in the first round. I think the away side will be happier of the two sides come full-time. The Double Chance is a safer option for punters who stake high.
Prediction: Draw/Golden Arrows
