There’s more DStv Premiership action coming your way today after last night’s scintillating match between Mamelodi Sundowns and AmaZulu FC.
SuperSport United have a score to settle with the Cape Town City after they knocked them out of the Nedbanck Cup, while Golden Arrows will be looking for their first win after a run of 9 losses in all competitions when they host Sekhukhune United. Here’s a preview of tonight’s fixtures.
Cape Town City vs SuperSport United
Cape Town City host SuperSport United in this eagerly anticipated league encounter that is a replay of the previous week’s Nedbank Cup match that was eventually won 3-1 by the Cityzens via penalty shootout. Tied on 30 points in second and third place on the log standings respectively, victory for either team could see them edge ahead in the race for CAF positions.
Tinkler’s men were held to a 1-1 draw by Chippa United in their last match, surrendering their lead six minutes after scoring first. Talisman Khanyisa Mayo has started the second round of the campaign in inspired fashion, scoring in two successive games. The Cityzens are winless in six matches against the visitors, with their last victory coming in April 2021 at Cape Town Stadium.
Buoyed by the Ke Yona victory eight days ago, SuperSport could tail Mamelodi Sundowns by nine points again if they manage to secure a win in Cape Town. Gavin Hunt lamented poor finishing in their 1-1 draw versus Stellenbosch, a match they played without several defensive options. Hunt will be able to call upon Grant Magerman and Bradley Grobler who were rested in the 1-1 home draw against Modern Future in the CAF Confederations Cup over the weekend.
Hunt’s charges won the reverse fixture 1-0 at Peter Mokaba Stadium and look the likeliest to repeat the trick today. Supersport have conceded in their three straight matches this year, with their opponents also not keeping a clean sheet in their last two matches. Both sides play fast paced football and should find the net here.
Prediction: Both Teams to Score
Golden Arrows vs Sekhukhune United
Nine defeats in a row in all competitions and Khenyeza is still clinging to his job. Another defeat at home to Sekhukhune United today could see them extend their historic winless run in the PSL era.
Abafana Bes’thende last tasted victory with a 2-1 win over Kaizer Chiefs in October 2023 and have since been donating points to their rivals. Persistent injury troubles and the constant changing of the starting XI has been the cause of the club’s poor run of form. A home victory for Arrows will move them into fifth position.
Undefeated in their last four games in all competitions, Sekhukhune resumed their league campaign with a resounding 3-1 win over Richards Bay. Coming off an impressive goalless draw against Moroccan powerhouse RS Berkane, head coach Lehlohonolo Seema seems to have his charges dancing to his tune. A win for the away side could see them momentarily move into the top eight, with other teams still to play over the weekend.
Arrows have conceded in their previous eight league fixtures, a weakness that will be exploited by the visitors. Meanwhile, Babina Noko are yet to lose in 2024 and will be the obvious favourite in this game. Arrows won the first encounter in October but the odds are stacked against them for the second round.
Sekhukhune may have weary legs but will at this encounter with so much positivity. I sense a win for the away side, but take the Double Chance for safety.
Prediction: Draw/Away win
