Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has explained how South Africa’s Premier Soccer League can improve.

Speaking to Soccer Africa on SuperSport TV, the Belgian was forthright, as he made his comment.

The PSL has received some praise after Bafana Bafana reached the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, despite the fact that the squad was dominated by local players.

Of the 23 players in the squad, 20 were PSL players, with only Percy Tau, Mihlali Mayambela and Siphephelo Sithole plying their trade overseas.

However, Broos has cautioned that more needs to be done to improve the standard of the PSL.

“I’ll repeat it as much as you want. The PSL level has to increase,” stated Broos.

“I’m very sorry – not physically or whatever, but we talked about it a few minutes ago, about tactical discipline, organisation. I see sometimes when I go to PSL games, then I wonder how are they playing though? There is no tactical discipline. Players are running everywhere. You can’t do that on the international level; you need tactical discipline, you need a plan,” he said.

Broos added that Bafana Bafana didn’t play the South African way at the Afcon and that worked.

“You know many people in Ivory Coast came to me from different countries, after the game for example and they said; ‘You don’t play like South Africa usually play’ and this is true because South African football is combinations and technical things. But on the international level, there’s so much more (to do).”

Broos concluded by stating that no African country can win the FIFA World Cup in 2026 and 2030.

For this to happen in future, teams from the continent would have to be more tactically disciplined.
