Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso wants his side to stay grounded in their goals for the season after their victory over title rivals and defending champions, Bayern Munich
Leverkusen seems poised to break Bayern’s Bundesliga monopoly, having dominated the league with 11 consecutive titles in recent history. Alonso’s team remains unbeaten this season after securing a confidence-boosting 3-0 victory over Bayern Munich over the weekend.
Alonso’s men maintained their outstanding defensive record against the champions, securing another clean sheet, having only conceded 14 goals throughout the entire league campaign.
To many, the weekend’s victory all but confirmed Leverkusen as frontrunners in this season’s title race. However, Bayer manager Xabi Alonso refuses to get carried away with the hype.
“I try to be realistic. I try to show them that it’s tough. If we think we have achieved something, we are not intelligent, and we don’t want to make those mistakes,” he added in the post-match interview.

Bayer Leverkusen is firmly in the driver’s seat in the title race now, five points ahead of Bayern Munich with 13 matches to go. Alonso, who is reportedly on the radar of a few European giants, aims to maintain his side’s scintillating form for the rest of the season to secure their first Bundesliga title in history.
