Kaizer Chiefs Football Manager Bobby Motaung has confirmed that adored goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune is still serving suspension.
Khune (36) was stripped of his captaincy and suspended in early December after he reported to training while under the influence of alcohol.
“I can’t share the time frame [as to when he’ll be integrated with the team], but he’s still in the process of suspension.
Remember, he was suspended by the DC [disciplinary committee], so there’s a process and he’s following that process.
The suspension may be expiring [soon], but there are still processes to be followed [before he forms part of the team again].”
When Amakhosi suspended and stripped Khune of his captaincy in early December, they made it clear that “once he has completed the required programmes and met the set expectations, he will be welcomed back into the team,” Bobby told Sowetan.
Khune’s last game was a 1-0 league loss to bitter rivals Orlando Pirates in November.
His time at as a player might be drawing to a close with his contract set to expire in June. Upon signing a new contract, the club had already communicated to Khune that this the deal was his last an an outfield player.
The club’s two other goalkeepers, Bruce Bvuma and Brandon Peterson were rewarded with contract extension on Thursday. Both goalies signed deals expiring in June 2026.
