Williams Optimistic Bafana Bafana Defense Can Restrict Nigeria’s Forwards
Bafana Bafana’s penalty hero Ronwen Williams is unfazed by Nigeria’s feared attackers as the two teams are set to meet in the semi-finals of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) at Stade Bouake today.
Williams is confident in his defence, who have triumphed against other quality attackers they have faced in the tournament.
Nigeria’s arsenal of attackers includes Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman from Atalanta, the France based Moses Simon and the English duo of Kelechi Iheneacho and Alex Iwobi among others.
Bafana have not conceded in four successive matches, including a last 16 clash against a Morocco side boasting plenty of attacking talent.
“We are looking forward to the challenge, it is going to be tough but we have been facing similar players throughout the tournament.
And our defence has been rock solid, it is not about me, it is about the team, we pride ourselves on our defending. Even the strikers and the wingers have been working hard and our back four has been amazing throughout,” said Williams in the pre-match press conference.
Bafana have not won against the Super Eagles in the history of the tournament, despite the two teams meeting in three encounters.
Williams is not concerned by this record.
“We have had so many stats against us in this tournament and we have proved that stats don’t play the game. We can’t change what happened in the past but we can change tomorrow’s result,” said Williams.
