Bafana Bafana midfielder Thabang Monare says it’s hard to believe the reality of defeating Morocco en route to the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations where they will face Cape Verde on Saturday.
South Africa produced a remarkable upset by defeating Africa’s highest ranked club 2-0 in the last 16 on Tuesday.
Monare entered the pitch as a late substitute against Morocco, with Bafana leading 1-0 at the time. When the referee whistled for full-time, Monare dropped to the ground in jubilance before he was embraced by his teammates.
Hugo Broos’ side have already begun preparations for the quarterfinal tie, with the squad arriving in Yamoussoukro on Thursday.
“Everything starts to sink in. Everything comes at you once and you understand the reality of where you are and what is going on and the team you just defeated. It felt like a dream at that moment, it was an out-of-body experience. I had to sit down until I felt it happening in the real world,” Monare told SAFA Media.
Bafana’s opponents, Cape Verde, are unbeaten in the tournament. The Sharks progressed to the knockout stages after overcoming tough opponents Egypt and Ghana in their group. They defeated Mauritania in a grueling last 16 tie on Monday.
Monare further warned his teammates against complacency ahead of the clash.
“They are a very tough team. The more we progress, the harder it gets. We have watched their games and they are a team willing to work very hard.
We also have to be on our A game, we are really going to have to work hard, not just to match them. We need to beat them,” said Monare.
