Mamelodi Sundowns have signed Argentian midfielder Matias Esquivel.

Esquivel has joined Sundowns on a four-and-a-half-year contract from Club Atletico Lanus in Argentina.

“Esquivel joins us as the second arrival of the mid-season window, following defender Zuko Mdunyelwa who joined in December 2023,” read Thursday’s statement from Sundowns.

“Esquivel has joined up with his new team-mates at Chloorkop as Bafana Ba Style returned from their break to gear up for the second half of the season.

“Welcome to the home of the champions, Matias.”

Sundowns are the reigning Premier Soccer League champions – and have won the title six seasons in a row.

They are currently in first position on the 2023-24 PSL points table after 11 wins, two draws and no defeats. Their PSL campaign will resume against Golden Arrows on 14 February.

“It feels really good to be back. It has been a great first half of the season for the team. We are just happy to be back at training and to pick up from where we left off. Most importantly, we can’t wait to see our supporters,” said Mamelodi midfielder Neo Maema.

Cape Town Spurs, meanwhile, have announced the signing of former AmaZulu midfielder Sphesihle Maduna. Spurs are currently at the very bottom of the 16-team PSL points table with one win, one draw and 14 defeats.
