Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has revealed they are targeting the final in the Africa Cup of Nations after advancing to the round of 16 in Ivory Coast.

South Africa drew 0-0 with Tunisia on Wednesday to end group E in second position – and collect a last 16 fixture against Morocco on Tuesday, 30 January 2024.

“We aim to qualify to the final – why not. We have a good team and I’m very confident,” said Broos.

“You always have to have some goals to achieve. Our first goal was to pass the group stages – we were not in an easy group.

“We have progressed a lot and we have to believe in our qualities, even though there are still some people who don’t believe, so there is quality.

“But we need these type of tournament to become better. And this makes me very happy. Like I said three times, we made it in a different way, and it means that this team progressed a lot compared to 18 months ago.”

Broos won the AFCON title with Cameroon in 2017. South Africa won the tournament in 1996 – and were runners-up in 1998. Senegal are the reigning champions.
