Ghana coach Chris Hughton has told of his disappointment as Ghana look set to bow out of the African Cup of Nations without winning a single pool game.
There remains an outside chance that the Black Stars could go through as one of the best third place finishers, but with just two points from two games, it looks like a remote possibility.
A brace from Jordan Ayew, both from the penalty spot, looked like it would be enough to see Ghana to a comfortable win over Mozambique, a result which would have given them second place in the group, but two goals in added time saw them finish in a draw and in third place on the table behind group winners Cape Verde and Egypt.
Commenting on the situation after the game Hughton told the media: “Things are very raw right now.
“There is a commotion outside. It’s an angry place at the moment.
“When you are unable to see the game through, it becomes very difficult. Our performances have not been good. We played three games, conceded two goals in each game, and have ourselves in a difficult situation.
“We had a group of players that really wanted to do well but the performance and results in these three games was not good enough. My effect on the team can only be judged by the results.
“This was the best opportunity we had to do well. We’ve had the players for a long period now to train together and we anticipated we would grow stronger the longer we went in the competition, but the fact is we haven’t.
“My assessment of my results is that they haven’t been good enough,” he said.
Asked if he anticipated being sacked following their underwhelming campaign Hughton replied: “Anything past this moment is not for me to talk about.”
Ghana will know their fate for certain on Wednesday, once all the pool games come to an end, when they will see if they qualify for one of the spots reserved for the four best third-placed finishers.
