Nigeria beat tournament hosts Ivory Coast 1-0 in Thursday’s Africa Cup of Nations fixture in Abidjan placing themselves in a great position to qualify for the knockout stages.

William Troost-Ekong’s penalty in the 55th minute was the only goal in the match. The result pushed Nigeria to second position in group A’s standings.

In Thursday’s other AFCON fixtures, Egypt and Ghana drew 2-2.

Mohammed Kudus gave Ghana the lead shortly before half-time before Omar Marmoush scored for Egypt in the 69th minute.

Kudus struck again in the 71st minute to reclaim the lead before Mostafa Mohamed completed the final scoreline in the 74th.

Egypt and Ghana moved to second and fourth position, respectively, in group B after Thursday’s result.

Meanwhile, Equatorial Guinea beat Guinea-Bissau 4-2.

Emilio Nsue scored a hat-trick for Equatorial Guinea. His goals came in the 21st, 51st and 61st minute.

Friday’s AFCON fixtures will see Senegal play Cameroon, Mozambique play Cape Verde Islands and Guinea meet Gambia.

Senegal are the reigning AFCON champions. Egypt are the most successful team in the history of the tournament with seven titles.
