Moroka Swallows goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi says he hopes the club’s players and management will be able to put the recent issues surrounding non-payment of salaries behind them and move forward successfully for the rest of the season.
The Swallows players refused to train or to honour fixtures scheduled over the festive season as they had not been paid by the club. This led to disciplinary action from the PSL and a fine of a million rand being levied.
The club are now dealing with the matter internally and seasoned campaigner Akpeyi says the sooner it is put behind them the better.
Speaking at a PSL/MultiChoice Player Transformation Programme event he said: “From what I know there is a disciplinary process with the players, and I am not too sure what is going to be the outcome.
“The hearings have been going on since last week and we hope there is finality soon so we can get back to doing what we love the most and continue from where we left off last year.
“There were financial issues at the club when it comes to player payments, and it is up to management on how they go about it. Regarding players not honouring the two games, it was painful and disappointing. We have lost six points and six goals which is a lot in the league.
“We have to look forward to what we can get from the remaining matches if things are resolved between players and the team.”
When the league resumes again in February, Swallows will return to action with an away tie against Cape Town City.
