AmaZulu FC head coach, Pablo Franco Martin, has reminded his players not to underestimate Cape Town Spurs ahead of Friday’s Premier Soccer League fixture in Durban.

Spurs are at the bottom of the 2023-24 PSL points table after winning one and losing 13 matches. AmaZulu are six positions superior in 10th after four wins, six draws and four losses.

“Cape Town Spurs could be very dangerous. When you are a football player, you are part of the technical staff, these are thin lines you have to face and when you cross that line,” said Martin.

“You are probably not going to compete at the level that these games demand, you can think that they only have three points and that is the fact, that is the reality.

“But when you are watching Cape Town’s games, you can see that they are competing, they are creating goal-scoring chances, they have good players.”

Spurs’ only victory this PSL season was against Orlando Pirates in early November. They have since appointed new head coach Ernst Middendorp amid a bid to avoid relegation.

“They won against one of the best teams in the country – Pirates. That speaks for itself and I think it’s enough alert to take the game with its responsibility that it demands,” added Martin.

AmaZulu ended last season’s PSL in 12th position. In 2021-22, they were seventh – and 2020-21, second. In 2019-20, they avoided relegation with a 13th-place finish.

“If I’m not mistaken, in the first half of the season, having played 15 games, if we win the next game we are going to be the best AmaZulu team in history,” said Martin.

“Even better than the AmaZulu team that finished in second place a few years ago or the one that qualified for the CAF Champions League or also for MTN8 tournaments for many seasons.

“So, for me, this is motivating enough. I think it’s a motivation enough for all of us to go for that and to leave a legacy once we leave in the future.”
