Chelsea beat Newcastle United after a penalty shootout in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup quarter-final at Stamford Bridge.

Callum Wilson scored in the 16th minute for Newcastle before Mykhailo Mudryk levelled the scoreline in stoppage time. Chelsea later advanced after winning the penalty shootout 4-2.

The result gave Chelsea a semi-final berth.

“I’m buzzing. That was a really good performance. We were battling hard to find a goal and thankfully it came right at the end through Misha’s goal and then we were confident we were going to win the penalty shootout,” said Chelsea matchday captain Conor Gallagher.

“I felt we deserved to win the game and obviously everyone is happy. We just had to keep going which we did.

“We had a lot of the ball, a lot of possession and we just had to keep creating the chances which we did and eventually we got one in. It was really good for us to stay focused and keep going. It was frustrating at times but we got what we deserved in the end.

“I loved the scenes at full-time. There haven’t been enough of those moments this season and last season, so hopefully there will be many more.”

Chelsea currently occupy 10th position in the 2023-24 English Premier League after six wins, four draws and seven defeats. They ended last season’s EPL in 12th position.

“This win here will be great for the confidence. It’s definitely the best feeling we’ve had this season so everyone is really happy and excited to go into the next round,” added Gallagher.

Chelsea have three EPL fixtures remaining this year, against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Crystal Palace and Luton Town.
