AmaZulu defender Taariq Fielies has explained September 2023’s decision to leave Cape Town City for the KZN-based side.

Fielies was with City for six years before joining AmaZulu two months ago.

“I think every footballer needs different challenges,” said Fielies.

“Always wants to test things with different teams. I think it came about when I spent a couple of seasons with Cape Town City. It was too long in my comfort zone and I just needed the time for a new challenge and AmaZulu was a good choice for me.”

City coach Eric Tinkler had publicly expressed disappointment in Fielies’ decision to join AmaZulu at the time.

“Me and coach Eric, we still have a good relationship and unfortunately things didn’t go, I would say, sideways, or whatever. But we still have a good relationship,” said Fielies.

AmaZulu are currently in 11th position on this season’s DStv Premiership points table. They have won three, drawn six and lost two matches. Fielies will miss Saturday’s meeting with Stellenbosch due to injury.

“It is unfortunate that I have a minor setback with an injury. But the staff are working on me. I’ m working on myself and I will be back before you know it,” he concluded.
